The Holy Month of Ramadhan
By Professor Henry Francis B. Espiritu
UP College Cebu City

The holy month of Ramadhan is an auspicious time to be grateful to Allah for giving us another opportunity to observe fasting and gain the benefits from this spiritual exercise. In His divine wisdom, Allah, who is the Lord of both our bodies and spirits, prescribed a spiritual exercise specifically for our benefit so that through this practice of fasting, we can gradually deny gratifications that are even lawful, such as eating and drinking from dawn to sundown, so our spirits will be strong to firmly deny all sinful and unlawful acts. Ramadhan fasting is established by our Beloved Allah for our own good. He establishes fasting not out of caprice or of unreasonable whim. The Holy Qur’an clearly declares the very purpose of fasting during this holy month: “Oh thou who believest, fasting is prescribed for thee, as it was prescribed for those before thee, so that thou may guard (thy minds and hearts) from the evil (coming from thy ‘self’)” (Surah Baqarah 2:183). From this holy verse, we can see

Moro leaders must unite for peace

Do you see a glass half-full or half-empty? For the peace talks in Mindanao, a lot depends on whose table that glass happens to be. If you talk to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), the peace agreement between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Philippine government (GPH) is a prescription to war in Mindanao. A faction of the Moro National Liberation Front that identified with Chairman Nur Misuari has found common cause with the BIFF and has called for “Kosovo-style” of democratic assemblies against the latest peace pact.

Peace is not without its “enemies” because its virtues have recently been closely associated with the MILF, an 11,000-strong rebel group in Mindanao that has successfully concluded what shall soon be known as a comprehensive agreement on the Bangsamoro. MILF chief peace negotiator Mohagher Iqbal has repeatedly said that it was only by accident that he headed the panel. The peace agreements that have been signed with the Philippine government are for the benefit of all stakeholders in the Bangsamoro, Iqbal said.

POEA cancels license of overcharging recruitment agency

POEA cancels license of overcharging recruitment agency
News Release from poea.gov.ph
2 May 2013

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration recently cancelled the license of Lifeline International Philippines, Inc. for collecting excessive placement fee from an applicant for a job in Taiwan.

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the applicant complained that Lifeline International asked him to pay PhP120,000 as placement fee. He was able to pay PhP50,000 but was not issued a receipt.

Cacdac said the amount required by the agency or the money actually paid by the applicant was way bigger than the prevailing wage of PhP27,000.00 in Taiwan. POEA rules limit the payment of placement fee to an amount equivalent to one month salary of the worker.
