Dajo<\/strong>, was a\u00a0<a title=\"Counter insurgency\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Counter_insurgency\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">counter insurgency<\/a>\u00a0action fought by the\u00a0<a title=\"United States Army\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">United States Army<\/a>\u00a0against native\u00a0<a title=\"Moro people\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moro_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moros<\/a>\u00a0in March 1906, during the\u00a0<a title=\"Moro Rebellion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moro_Rebellion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moro Rebellion<\/a>\u00a0phase of the\u00a0<a title=\"Philippine-American War\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippine-American_War\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philippine-American War<\/a>. While fighting was limited to ground action on\u00a0<a title=\"Jolo Island\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jolo_Island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jolo Island<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0<a title=\"Sulu Archipelago\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sulu_Archipelago\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sulu Archipelago<\/a>, use of naval gunfire contributed significantly to the overwhelming firepower brought to bear against the\u00a0<a title=\"Muslim\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muslim\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muslim<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Insurgent\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Insurgent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">insurgents<\/a>, who were mostly armed with melee weapons. The description of the engagement as a battle is disputed because of both the overwhelming firepower of the attackers and the lopsided casualties. The conflict,<!--more--> especially the final phase of the battle, is also known as the\u00a0<a title=\"Moro Crater Massacre\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moro_Crater_Massacre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moro Crater Massacre<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During this battle, 790 men and officers, under the command of Colonel J.W. Duncan, assaulted the volcanic crater of\u00a0<a title=\"Bud Dajo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bud_Dajo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bud Dajo<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"Tausug language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tausug_language\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taus\u016bg<\/a>:\u00a0<em>B\u016bd Dahu<\/em>), which was populated by 800 to 1000\u00a0<a title=\"Moro people\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moro_people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moro<\/a>\u00a0villagers, including women and children. According to Herman Hagedorn (who was writing prior to\u00a0<a title=\"World War II\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_War_II\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World War II<\/a>), the position held by the Moros was &#8220;the strongest which hostiles in the\u00a0<a title=\"Philippines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philippines<\/a>\u00a0have ever defended against American assault.&#8221; (pg. 64) Although the battle was a victory for the American forces, it was also an unmitigated public relations disaster.
