{"id":5046,"date":"2012-06-24T00:01:20","date_gmt":"2012-06-23T21:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/patnubay.org\/?p=5046"},"modified":"2019-07-06T00:34:54","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T21:34:54","slug":"part-time-dubai-maids-claim-theyre-not-paid-right","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/patnubay.org\/?p=5046","title":{"rendered":"Part-time Dubai maids claim they\u2019re not paid right"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Source:<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gulfnews.com\/news\/gulf\/uae\/employment\/part-time-dubai-maids-claim-they-re-not-paid-right-1.1039450\">gulfnews.com<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nDubai: Several women working for a Dubai company that offers part-time maid services are complaining that they\u2019re being made to work long hours for low salaries while their boss is allegedly raking in money as business has been brisk.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>They told\u00a0<em>Gulf News\u00a0<\/em>that they go from house to house to do domestic chores which is very harsh and difficult yet they only get a monthly pay of Dh1,200.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work for eight hours a day with minimum of two hours in each house,\u201d Marlene, a Filipina, said.<\/p>\n<p>She said her sponsor is an Emirati woman, who allegedly owns the maid service company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe stay in Ajman in a sharing accommodation with other housemaids and that accommodation is rented by our sponsor,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Sana, an Ethiopian, said she also gets paid Dh1,200, but the amount is not commensurate to her tremendous work load.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI serve in different houses and my employer sends us by minivan to the houses we serve in. It is very difficult work and I\u2019m so exhausted and it is not rewarded work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Zahra, also from Ethiopia, said: \u201cOur employer is also an Emirati woman and she sponsors around 40 housemaids and we are [being managed by] a lady from the Philippines who hands over our salaries and arrange transportation and everything related to us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The maids claim that the maid services company charge Dh35 to Dh40 per hour which translates to at least over Dh8,000 per maid in a month\u2019s time.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gulf News<\/em>\u00a0tried calling the company\u2019s phone number to get their side of the story, but no one wanted to make a comment. The company likewise refused to allow Gulf News to visit their office and speak to the owner or manager.<\/p>\n<p>Mohammad Bin Dakhin, Director of Governmental Communication at the Ministry of Labour told\u00a0<em>Gulf News<\/em>\u00a0that the ministry has nothing to do with domestic helpers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe only licensed recruitment agencies and all similar agencies and the ministry never licenses such part-time offices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe usually license recruitment agencies who offer full-time domestic helpers and labourers, but we have nothing to do with such practices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the ministry had earlier banned cleaning services companies from allowing their workers to work in houses as they are only allowed to send cleaners to work for companies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Costly but convenient<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hiring part-time maids may be costly, but is convenient for some families in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a working woman and it is easy for me to get a part-time housemaid.
