Parliamentary Move to Temporarily Halt Recruitment of Filipino Workers Due to Spread of HIV
Published: Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at 02:00 — by Waleed Diab
A Member of Parliament, Mohammad Al-Ahmad, revealed his intention to submit an urgent proposal to the government at the start of the next parliamentary session, demanding a temporary halt to the recruitment of Filipino workers to the Kingdom of Bahrain, following the spread of the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS ) in the Republic of the Philippines, until the epidemiological situation becomes clearer and the health situation there stabilizes.
In a statement to Akhbar Al Khaleej, he said that his primary objective in submitting this urgent proposal is to ensure the health and safety of citizens and residents of the Kingdom of Bahrain, especially in light of international and regional health reports indicating an alarming increase in AIDS cases in the Philippines. He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain is always committed to implementing proactive preventative policies that ensure the community is protected from any potential health risks associated with migrant workers.
He added that his proposal would be to temporarily halt recruitment requests as a precautionary measure, and that it would not permanently target the Philippines. He also noted that this situation requires opening the door to increased recruitment of domestic workers from other countries to ensure the continued uninterrupted fulfillment of Bahraini families’ needs.
MP Al-Ahmad noted that there is a legislative vacuum to regulate the recruitment of domestic workers in Bahrain, stressing that decisions are made based on the individual discretion of officials at the Labour Market Regulatory Authority.
He explained that the time has come for Bahrain to take the lead in enacting legislation that keeps pace with international developments regarding domestic workers, preserving their rights while at the same time protecting the interests of the nation and its citizens above all else.
